Balraj Kapoor (played by Amitabh Bachchan) is a rich businessman who has a progressive modern outlook in life. He believes strongly that family, culture and values are of the greatest importance. Shobhna (played by Hema Malini), his wife is much more than merely his better half. They shower their love and affections on their only child Avinash (played by Salman Khan). Balraj feels that Avinash is more like a friend than his son. After spending many years abroad studying, Avinash returns home. His returns brings light into their lives once again. There is happiness everywhere. Then, Avinash meets the pretty Millie (played by Rani Mukherjee), a painter. They fall in love and get married. They are blessed with a lovely child named Ansh. Rajat (played by John Abraham) a young musician and best friend of Millie, was himself in love with Millie but had never let her know it. He is however, very happy for Millie and Avi. He decides to immigrate to Europe, pursuing his musical career. Then fate plays a cruel blow and one day Avinash meets with a fatal accident. For Millie life without Avinash is unbearable. Balraj and Shobhna try to find the love of Avinash in Ansh at this time. Balraj cannot bear to see Millie’s bland and dull life. He decides to find Rajat and ask him to marry Millie. He feeld that this will help bring the colour and zest back into Millie's life. But Balwant (played by Om Puri), Balraj’s elder brother living in rural Punjab with his family and his widowed sister-in-law object to Balraj’s plans. Even Shobhna may not be with him on this occasion.
